Employment
Lack's Beach Service employs about 100 seasonal lifeguards. We are currently accepting applications for the season of 2008! Our season is March till October, but peak season is Memorial Day to Labor Day.
The role of a Lack’s lifeguard is considered a dual role; meaning guards not only maintain beach and water safety but are in charge of renting beach umbrellas and beach chairs. Being a dual role lifeguard, you receive special training in order to maintain a high safety standard. As well as being independently in charge of renting beach equipment; lifeguards arrive on the beach at about 7:30a.m. in order to set up equipment for the day. In the later afternoon guards are also in charge of putting away beach equipment. Lack's Beach Service has a handful of lifeguards whom do not participate in the dual role. They are called Lifeguard Only. Lifeguard Only means there is no rental equipment involved. These guards just maintain beach and water safety.
As well as many professional skills, you will have the opportunity to meet people from all around the country and the world. Many guards build strong friendships with each other which lead to lifelong friends national and worldwide. Lack's Beach Service hires many guards from all over Europe and Canada. We employ guards from different geographical areas, therefore we work with you to ensure housing.
Generally, lifeguards are assigned to a certain location on the beach, and will work there throughout the season. On duty hours, required by the City of Myrtle Beach are 8am- 5pm, seven days a week. We have a few lifeguards whom work just as Relief Guards. Relief Guards work when days off are needed. These guards move locations as needed. Lifeguards receive days off approximately every 10 days.
Lifeguards are paid every week. The average pay is $400- $550 a week. Gross pay varies from each stand assessment. A first year guard can expect to make about $450 a week. Guards who work equipment stands can also expect to make daily tips.

Typical day as a lifeguard
7-7:30am
Morning Check in. Arrive at our warehouse to receive
2-way radio, rental books, and an overview on the weather and ocean conditions.
7-9am
Set up. Setting up of rental equipment including beach chairs and umbrellas as well as lifeguard station with all appropriate attire. Not all lifeguard stands require 2 hours to set up equipment, but all stands must be ready for customers at 9 am.
9am-4pm
Maintain beach safety by enforcing Myrtle Beach city and county ordinances, rent equipment, handle lost and found children, and do any rescues and first aid if necessary. Of course with a 45 min. lunch break.
4-5pm
Break down. This is when lifeguards are allowed to put beach rental equipment away for the day. Lifeguards are on duty until 5pm regardless if equipment is already packed away.
5pm
Blow down. At exactly 5pm “blow down” is called over the 2-way radio and everyone is to leave the beach. Everyone then is to meet back at the warehouse for check in. Check In is a quick and organized daily procedure. It is when radios, rental receipts and money are turned in.
Most lifeguards become great friends and many live together, therefore the evenings are filled with social activities. Many restaurants, clubs and entrainment locations offer an excellent lifeguard discount.

Training
Once accepted for employment, the paperwork and handbook will be reviewed. After this has been done, you will be placed on the beach with a veteran lifeguard to shadow for three days. During this time you and the veteran lifeguard will go over a list of criteria such as using the 2-way radio, professionalism, identify hazards and ocean conditions. Not until both rookie and veteran guard feel completely confident will the rookie guard be placed at a stand alone.
Rookie School
Each rookie guard participates in county wide Ocean Rescue Academy. The training is after work for a few nights on the beach practicing and learning different rescue techniques.
Surf School
Surf schools are weekly in-service training for all lifeguards to attend. Each week is a different topic on first aid and lifeguarding. We have in-service training to keep our skills sharp and to practice swimming in the ocean.
